ART DESCRIPTION — Underwater beauty and dystopian science fiction come together in the “aphotic zone,” the part of the ocean not reached by sunlight. Footage from a research project studying climate change at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico is combined with the artist’s digitally generated images of a future where the Earth is flooded. The ruins of the Duga radar station, relics of industrious, warlike humanity, rest on the ocean floor. Built by the Soviet Union in the 1970s during the Cold War, the vast radar complex lies near Chernobyl, Ukraine, and was in operation when the nuclear disaster occurred in 1986.
